Spanish

We are committed to delivering a high-quality Spanish education that inspires a love of learning languages and an appreciation for diverse cultures. In our multicultural community, we aim for all children to interpret, create, and exchange meaning across cultures while celebrating and advocating for cultural diversity. Through Spanish, our pupils develop their understanding of the world and grow into confident global citizens.

Children begin their Spanish journey in the Early Years Foundation Stage exploring language patterns and sounds through songs and rhymes. In Key Stage 1 (Year 1-2) they build on this foundation by learning Spanish phonics, grammar, and vocabulary in fun, engaging weekly lessons led by their class teacher. As they progress to Key Stage 2 (Year 3-6), these skills are expanded with a greater focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Spanish is woven into the school day and classroom routines, ensuring consistent exposure to the language.

Our Spanish lessons are interactive, purposeful, and enjoyable, igniting a passion for the language and its culture. Pupils use their growing language skills to explore and interact with the world around them.

Learning a foreign language opens doors for children to communicate confidently and understand the world more deeply. By the end of Year 6, we aim for every child to have developed a strong foundation in Spanish, ready to embrace secondary school studies with enthusiasm. As they leave Halley House, our pupils take with them not only the skills to speak Spanish but also the qualities of responsibility, creativity, and active citizenship that prepare them for a lifetime of learning and engagement in a multicultural world.

We have a twin school in Spain

In 2024 we have officially partnered with a school in Madrid!

All children from EYFS to Year 6 have the exciting opportunity to correspond with pen pals from our partner school in Madrid. This cultural exchange allows pupils to practise reading and writing in Spanish while connecting with peers from another country and broadening their perspectives.

“I liked learning the numbers to 30 because it’s a pattern. Now I can work out how to say any number, even numbers bigger than 100!”

“I love being able to teach everyone what I say at home. They always practise what I teach them”

“I already speak two languages and now I know three! It’s so much better to speak more languages because you can speak to more people and learn from them”.
